Due to the advance of the pandemic, carnival parades and street parade groups (blocos de rua) are prohibited in 2022 as well. However, at least in Rio de Janeiro, the Carnival Tuesday holiday is maintained and, if the employee goes to work, the company shall pay overtime, usually at double-time rate. Monday and Ash Wednesday, on the other hand, are not holidays, but civil service holidays, and companies can choose to carry out regular work without the need for additional pay to the workers.

Our lawyer Michelle Pimenta Dezidério, specialized in Labor Law, talked to the newspaper O Globo about this and emphasized that, although the employer can provide guidance about the contamination by the coronavirus, they cannot interfere in the employee's times of rest, and no penalties can be applied for this reason.
